Tooth:

Tooth (plural: teeth) is a small, hard and whitish outgrowth on the jaw or skin of mouth as well as pharynx of most vertebrates. It is not made of bone. A typical vertebrate’s tooth consists of pulp, dentine, cementum and enamel. Teeth are mainly used for biting and masticating of food or for attack and defense.

Any of various analogous (similar or parallel) outgrowths occurring in mouth or shell or exoskeleton in invertebrates are also called as teeth (singular: tooth).

Teeth of vertebrates may be divided into two main categories such as-

  • Homodont: Teeth are alike or similar or analogous, found in most of fishes.
  • Heterodont: Teeth are unlike or dissimilar (such as incisors, canines, premolar, molar), found in most mammals.
